My kitchen contractor called me at 8 am today to talk about grout. I can count the number of times I've thought about grout colors on two fingers. Three if you include that I'm telling you about it now. John's a very tactful, laid back guy, so our conversations usually go like this:
J: "I'm going to grout the kitchen floor today. Have you given any thought to the grout color."
That clues me in to the fact that I probably should have considered the matter prior to this morning.
Me: Umm, well, I guess I don't want anything too dark. Something nice? John, you probably have a better idea of what will look good. What do you suggest?
There's no "probably" about it. John used to be a stone mason. He knows these things.
J: The tile is gorgeous. I'd go with something that closely matches.
Me: Sounds great!
J: Just wanted to make sure you didn't have your heart set on a particular color.
Does that actually happen? Do people really fall in love with grout colors?
I assured him that whatever he selects will be fine. Never let it be said that I'm not easy to work for. We've had a lot of conversations like this in the last few weeks. Invariably, they trigger another trip to the Home Depot for me. Last week, it was, "Have you given any thought to the thresholds?"
Thresholds. Quick! Without looking at any doorway in your house, identify your thresholds.
Could you?
For the record, the ones from my kitchen to the dining room and reading room are now red oak -- custom cut and installed. They get a coat of polyurethane today.
I promise a new picture of the kitchen progress sometime this week. By week's end he should have the floor finished and more cabinets installed.
