This had to be a night that Kristy Lee and David dreaded. What do a budding country artist and a rocker have in common with Mariah Carey? Mariah has a bigger range than the Alps and the Grand Tetons put together. Compared to her, Kristy Lee is the bunny hill at Pico in Vermont.
However, much to my (and probably everybody's) surprise, two Cooks did not spoil the songfest soup. Kristy Lee was the best of all the women (Never though you'd hear me say that, did you?) and David was terrific. You know, he could be the only contestant left that has a prayer in Hell of beating David A.
Most of the night, unfortunately, was only a few zzz short of somnambulant. Nothing against Mariah's songs, but the performances bored me with few exceptions (Jason, David Cook). I think it was a plot to lull Simon into complacency. He was actually nice more often than nasty. Either that or someone inadvertently switched his Coke cup with Paula's and he got a taste of her meds.
Incoherency is, apparently, contagious. What was with the mixed up food analogy exchange after Brooke performed? Hamburger with only the bun? No meat in the burger? No! There was meat, but no condiments. (Thanks for that, Randy!) All I know is that the proof is in the pudding (No, I have no idea what that means.) and Brooke's number was bland.
Carly might have held onto a spot by the skin of her teeth this week. In the interest of full disclosure, she didn't really sing a Mariah Carey song. Without You was originally done by Badfinger, but the version most of us know (at least most of us over the age of 35) is Harry Nilsson's. (Famous for a song with the lyrics, "You're breaking my heart, you're tearing it apart so F**k you. We used to play that on our college radio station and pot out the obscenity just to drive our program manager crazy.) Both Mariah and Whitney Houston covered the tune later on.
I really liked Jason's performance and, once more, he saved himself by holding true to his out-theredness. Syesha was unremarkable, or at least that's what I'm claiming because I forgot the song she sang before the final note faded into silence.
David A -- another really strong performance. The kid is a great singer. I just wish he'd do something up tempo for once.
